Then on Sunday, I managed to go see the ‘Nuri Comic’ exhibition on the top floor gallery of the BEAMS clothes and lifestyle store in Shinjuku. Nuri Comic means ‘painted strip cartoon‘ and manga illustrator Suzy Amakane is believed to have created the form in the 1980s. The exhibition was of works by 9 new artists all influenced by Amakane and all reject the modern digital medium that usually goes in hand in hand with cartoons and manga here in Japan.

A small exhibition, but some funny and great pieces on display, the detail that goes into the paintings seems much more visibile compared to the digital counterparts of the industry, but what was definitely similar was the charm and story telling that the medium brings to people. The comic strips look great set into their canvases with all the characters designed perfectly. Apologies for the lack of photos, most exhibitions in Tokyo don’t let you take photos and I haven’t been able to find any online.
